Workshop II

In this second session of the Farm Business Development & Management Workshop Series, participants will learn how to identify and work with professional advisors, explore market research strategies, and navigate some of the food safety regulations relevant to their operations.

Derek Simmonds, a Business Development Specialist at Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), will discuss seeking out professional advisors and conducting market analysis to refine an agricultural operation's focus. Don Stoekel of the Produce Safety Alliance will provide an overview of key food safety regulations, with a particular focus on water safety for irrigation and processing.

While designed primarily for beginning and relatively new farmers, this workshop series is open to all current and aspiring farmers and ranchers. Over the course of the series, participants will cover the essential elements of establishing and maintaining a successful farm operation — from conducting market research and obtaining licenses to managing cash flow and analyzing financial performance. Each 90-minute workshop will feature expert speakers who will address the many critical aspects of business development and management.
