The Oswego County 4-H Program will be presenting another short-term Sparks Club for local youth aged 10-18 this August. A ‘Sparks Club’ is a short, two-to-four session club that introduces youth to the 4-H program and the curriculum developed by 4-H educators. After completing this club, youth will be enrolled as 4-H independent members for the 2023-2024 year.

Sparks - Astronomy will be a three-session, science 4-H club for Oswego County youth interested in astronomy and learning about comets, the Solar System, craters on the moon, and much more. This Sparks Club will introduce youth to what scientists have discovered about our planet and beyond and feel a new connection to our world each time they look at the sky! Projects in this Sparks will include making a comet from natural materials, building pop rockets, 'mapping' out the Solar System, and taking a trip to the Shineman Planetarium in Oswego.

Please note: The Shineman Planetarium is located on SUNY Oswego's campus. Youth will need to provide their own transportation to and from the planetarium. This date and time are to be determined as this time.

If the youth is not currently enrolled in the Oswego County 4-H Program, an adult must attend the first session on August 8th to fill out additional paperwork. An adult does not need to attend sessions with youth after August 1st.

Fee

$15 per youth. Registration is required as space is limited.

  1. Take County Route 69 East for 9 miles in to Amboy Center.
  2. Turn left onto State Route 183. Go north for 4 miles; entrance is on the right.

From Pulaski:

  1. Take County Route 13 South to Williamstown.
  2. Turn right on to State Route 183.The entrance will be on the left after 1 mile.

From Camden:

  1. Take County Route 13 North to Williamstown.
  2. Turn left onto State Route 183.The entrance will be on the left after 1 mile.

From Oswego:

  1. Take State Route 104 East until it ends at the junction of County Route 13.
  2. Turn right on to County Route 13. Follow instructions “From Pulaski.”

From Syracuse:

  1. Take I-81 North to Parish; exit 33 (County Route 69).
  2. Follow instructions “ From Parish.”

Philosophy

The best way to learn about ecology is to be out in it! Amboy 4-H Environmental Education Center is a laboratory where youth and adults can observe nature first hand, alone or under the guidance of one of the Center’s Environmental Educators. Public programs often feature guest presenters who are recognized leaders in the fields of wildlife management, outdoor education, and botany. It is also the Center’s belief that learning should be fun.
